Philip Hughlett | Joplin MO
Philip was born in Joplin, Missouri. He studied painting, sculpture, and fiber art at the Kansas City Art Institute and exhibited in the first student installation at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art & Design with a Dia De Los Muertos sculpture in 1994. Philip also designed and produced a steel sculpture for Tres Studios, a Kansas City specialty furnishing company. He illustrated editorial, news and advertising design at the Pitch Weekly and worked in the area as a freelance designer and illustrator for over ten years. His 2005 exhibitions include Bar Natasha, The Coffee Girls, Wines by Jennifer, and The Pitch Gallery with Kym Griswold. He has also participated in local festivals such as Art Westport and Platte County Arts at Zona Rosa. Philip retired from Hallmark Cards as a Production Designer and creates artwork out of his home in Joplin.
Philip’s artwork is a collection of acrylic painting, charcoal, and watercolor. His focus is primarily on musicians and the relationship between the figure, the instrument, and the music itself. Using an eclectic combination of illustrative techniques, Philip’s paintings capture the rhythm, movement, and style of music from a contemporary perspective. His watercolor drawings mingle coffee, wine, and Indian ink with traditional watercolor paint to create a dynamic relationship of motion and color on a more intimate scale. He also accepts commissions and creates custom pieces upon request.
